John was born in Wigan and studied with John Cameron and Nielsen Taylor. His professional career began at English National Opera in London where he performed many diverse principal roles and toured all over the world. Highlights of his time with this company include his creation of the role of Mars in Orpheus in the Underworld and appearing on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Once John had too many children to travel safely on the London Underground he moved to Opera North where his career continued. He was cast in many roles including The Drum Maker in the exciting new production of Pinocchio (Jonathan Dove) and also performed in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Ravenna.
John has always had a busy concert and oratorio career alongside his opera commitments. He has worked with many of the leading conductors and sung in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, Purcell Rooms, Queen Elizabeth Hall and, most notably, London Zoo. He has also appeared on television and made radio programmes and recordings, as well as providing sound tracks for films.
In 2010 John made his debut as a guest principal at Covent Garden where he subsequently shared the stage with Jonas Kauffman in Don Carlo, Angela Gheorghiu in La Rondine, Renee Fleming in Capriccio and Sir Bryn Terfel in Die Meistersinger. His future plans include a busy concert schedule, several oratorios and a return to the Royal Opera House in the revival of Salome. He is also much occupied with surviving his family and other animals in the wilds of the Yorkshire Dales.
